Apparently Star Trek is no longer fiction. At least some parts. It’s now possible to sit around with 4 people and be the only one in the room. Or work on a whiteboard with someone else who is 1,000 miles away. Just put on a pair of glasses, press a button, and voila. Of course, remote work isn’t new, but some reasons for its feasibility are. Holoportation is one of these reasons - a new technological advancement developed by Microsoft that leverages augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and their proprietary HoloLens glasses to make the world smaller.

This futuristic tech won’t be considered futuristic when compared to an ophthalmic technology company that is moving beyond wearable tech and into embeddable tech. Instead of putting on glasses, imagine walking into a room and being able to scroll virtual bookshelves in a particular sequence of blinks. As the real estate fray continues heating up on our campuses, will our IT departments consider holoportation and its benefits?
